If you are after for a new funky game for your BlackBerry PlayBook then look no further as Jump Birdy Jump is here and it's a right bobby dazzler! Developed by Ovogame, who also brought us Smiley's Pop and Tropical Mania, Jump Birdy Jump brings great challenging game play along with bright, crisp, clean graphics and even some sweet background music.

You control the birdy and your aim is to get to your lady friend. But, in order to do this this you must jump between wires using a slingshot. Things get pretty hard though as there are many obstacles that you cannot hit as well as moving gates etc.

In order to progress to further chapters in the game you will need to collect stars along the way. This is easier said than done as you will discover when you play the game for yourself.

Jump Birdy Jump is a real beauty of a game and if your own the PlayBook you really need to check out this one. Well worth it's $2.99 price tag. It will also be available on BlackBerry 10 real soon!

Sketch

Time for a quick bargain for you BlackBerry PlayBook owners. Sketch W Friends is currently on sale at half price and will remain so until January 10th. The special price of $0.99 is a real steal as the app is a tonne of fun.

If you haven't seen our previous posts on the app, it is essentially a drawing game where you compete with other users around the globe. Once you have joined a room - all the visitors to that room will take it in turns to draw a certain item and the rest of the folk have to guess what it is. Of course, it isn't quite that simple as not only are you up against the clock, but you are relying on the other peoples ability to actually draw - something that can be quite comical with the game.

Since we first announced that Sketch W Friends was available it has received several updates and the app now sits on version 4.0.0 which most recently added Theme and Stroke Rooms as well as the ability to challenge your Facebook friends to a mini game of Sketch W Friends by posting your drawing on Facebook.

Get it while it's hot.

Marmalade brings Monkube's comic book space adventure '6th Planet' to the BlackBerry PlayBook

6th Planet

If you're like me and fancy some comic book styled games, you'll certainly want to check out 6th Planet from Monkube. Having been brought to BlackBerry World thanks to Marmalade, 6th Planet is a visually stunning epic to sit down and play. If you're not familiar with the game, the goal is to guide your space pod from one side of the planet to the other side. Sounds fairly easy but I assure you, it's not as you're only given limited ways to achieve your mission.

6th Planet tells the story of a near future, where the planet Saturn suddenly changes into a possible place for humans to live. To find out what is going on, a monkey is sent into space. This is the beginning of a series of events that will determine mankind’s future.

The comic story, in between the levels, consists of a total of 188 screens, which is two comic books worth of images. The story is co-written and drawn by the studio that’s responsible for the Oscar nominated animation films The Triplets of Belleville and The Secret of Kells. Screens are colored by Raymund Lee, famous for his work on Marvel’s Wolverine series.

In total, story mode contains 50 levels, divided across 7 worlds. In other words, there is hours of gameplay and Monkube will be adding more content as time goes on. Right now, 6th Planet is available in BlackBerry World for only $0.99 which, in my personal opinion is a steal.

If you're into hard core action, you'll want to avoid it but if you're into a casual sit down on your couch and lose a few hours of your life gamer this fits the bill. You can dig the trailer below or just skip on over to BlackBerry World and grab the download now.

Get your race on with Ragged Edge 3D for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Ragged Edge 3D

It's rare that I come across a BlackBerry PlayBook game that sucks me in as much as Ragged Edge 3D. I first saw it pop up yesterday but didn't get a chance to check it out until last night -- and I'm glad I did. The obvious comparison will be made to the old classic Wipeout, but Ragged Edge 3D steps things up and gives you an awesome race experience on the PlayBook. It brings things into the future and with the great graphics and sound, Ragged Edge 3D will keep you going for hours.

My first try I didn't handle too well - clanging my way around the edges of the track. Once I got the hang of it, things picked up and I managed to scrape out a few silver medals. After my first few races I hooked my PlayBook up to the TV in my living room and the experience was awesome. The sound quality on this game is second to none and I love it. I found myself lost playing for nearly two hours and I can't wait to get back at it later today. It's simple and addictive, and if you're at all a fan of racing games you need to give this one a go. You can grab it now for $3.99.

Master your reflexes with Springy for the BlackBerry PlayBook

$

It isn't going to take me long to describe Springy as it is an extremely simple concept but a lot of fun. According to the developer Springy is a kind of pet - i'm not sure what kind of pet looks like him but that doesn't matter. The aim of the game is to drag your finger around the screen and to not let Springy nibble it. Sounds simple - it isn't.

Unless you have ninja like relaxes this game is challenging. Each round lasts 20 seconds and just to spice things up a bit there are random walls that appear which can both hinder and help you. As Springy moves so fast it can take a while to get the hang of things but after a little frustration it is kind of a cool game.

The game is all about points. Clearly, completing a level helps but you will also get more points for allowing Springy to get as close to your finger as possible. Don't go off the screen onto the PlayBooks bezels though as that will result in a fail. Springy is free to download so go give it a try. It's a wee bit addictive.

Get blasting some asteroids with Satellite Assault for the BlackBerry PlayBook

$

Satellite Assault for the BlackBerry PlayBook brings back a few memories for me. If you are old enough to have played Asteroids on the Atari back in the day you will remember what fun it was. Satellite Assault is not that different, apart from clearly things have improved over the last 20+ years.

You control a space craft that must avoid contact with asteroids that appear on screen. Blasting one with your laser will smash it into three smaller pieces which will also need shooting and with multiple asteroids on screen it can get pretty busy as time goes on. There are also enemy spacecraft that will try and shoot you down - avoid them and blast them to bits.

The onscreen controls are simple and you have a couple of options in terms of how things work. As you will see fro the video I favoured the 'wheel' option and this control on the left of the screen is how your turn the craft left and right. Over on the right is where you make the ship move forward and also the fire button to destroy the asteroids.

With options for the length of the game as well as different difficulty levels, Satellite Assault is a bunch of fun. It's pretty hard though so be prepared for a challenge. And at $0.99 it won't break the bank.

Guide your space pod to safety with 6th Planet for the BlackBerry PlayBook

$

6th Planet has already had great success on iOS and luckily us BlackBerry PlayBook owners now have the opportunity to get a slice of the pie. The game is all about controlling your space pod and guiding it to the landing area. That sounds pretty easy but of course it isn't that straight forward. Gravity is sucking you down so you must utilise the controls to avoid crashing into the ground or other obstacles. There are only two on-screen controls and these manoeuvre the pod either left/right or holding down both at the same time will move it upwards.

As you progress through the levels the course you need to take gets harder and with other objects entering your space you need to guide your pod around them. Just to make life a little harder you only get a certain amount of fuel so speed is of the essence. Running out of juice will send you plummeting to your doom.

As shown in the video, there are a selection of hand drawn animations before each level so if you appreciate a good comic then you will love this extra feature. There is the option within the settings to disable them if they get on your nerves.

6th Planet is a pretty chilled out game but will test your piloting skills. As well as being addictive the game comes at a decent price too - only $0.99/£1.00. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Test your patience and combat skills with Eufloria for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Eufloria

One of the ways in which I pass the time is by playing games on my BlackBerry PlayBook. You wouldn't think that staring at a tablet all night would be cause for relaxation but sometimes you come across a game that mixes soothing sounds, pleasing visuals, and a little strategy to not only keep your mind sharp but calms you down as well. Eufloria by Omni Systems Limited may be a game about spreading seeds and growing flowers and colonies, but it's extremely infectious and one you won't be putting down anytime soon.

It does take some time getting used to the premise but once you do this game is quite addicting. What is the endgame you may ask? As you progress through each level, your basic goal is to populate the asteroids by spreading your seedlings, or spores, for the "Growers." New elements and short-term goals are introduced in every level as you learn how to play.

Eufloria Play Story Mode

Features

  • Beautifully designed touch screen interface
  • A 25 level "Story Mode" with many hours of gameplay
  • "Relaxed Mode", for a more ambient experience which anyone can enjoy
  • "Skirmish Levels" that can be played over and over
  • "Dark Matter Mode" for a stylish, more challenging way to play
  • Original ambient soundtrack by "Milieu"
  • Many procedurally generated levels which are different every time!

As you explore all of the territories, you must overcome various enemies to gain control of each and every asteroid in that level. While these planetoids vary in size and strength your army of seedlings also come in three types in order to colonize them depending on strength, speed, and power. All of which can either hinder or further your progress.

Those new to the game can also control the speed in which the game advances (slow, medium, and fast) until acclimated. For me, sometimes the highest speed is still too slow, and again there is a lot of waiting involved in this game, especially while your reinforcements grow and mature.

To make matters more interesting, users can choose to zoom in to view detailed scenes or zoom out for the overall board. If you choose the latter you are missing out on the sounds and graphics that allow you to view each seedling be planted and bloom, fly in frenzy around the asteroid, or engage the enemy.

Eufloria Seedlings

Eufloria is a beautiful and soothing game though the pace can be slow at times especially when restarting the level from scratch. The skill is learning how to maneuver your seedlings based on their abilities and how many dyson trees to plant in order to strengthen your asteroid against an attacking swarm.

That's not to say Eufloria isn't intriguing and fun for a real-time strategy game. For me the, the desire to conquer each of the territories or to see what new levels and features is what keeps bringing me back each and every night. You can find Eufloria for only $2.99 in BlackBerry World.

Halfbrick Studios adds BlackBerry 10 support to Jetpack Joyride

*UPDATE* - Looks like this one was removed for now. Not sure as to why really but some folks were having issues with it. No doubt it will be back soon.

With Jetpack Joyride from Halfbrick Studios having already arrived on the BlackBerry PlayBook long ago, I was wondering when we would see it transition over to BlackBerry 10. As it turns out, we didn't have to wait nearly as long as I was starting to think we would.

Right now, if you fire up BlackBerry World and search for Jetpack Joyride you'll find the game readily available for download and not only is it there but it also remains free.

If you have a BlackBerry Z10, you can hit the link below to grab the download and of course, if you haven't already grabbed it for your BlackBerry PlayBook then now is as good a time as any.

Asphalt 7 on the BlackBerry PlayBook

Following its launch on BlackBerry 10, Asphalt 7: Heat, along with a bunch of other Gameloft offerings, is now available on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Joining the fast-paced racing game are N.O.V.A. 3, the pre-eminent sci-fi shooter, Let's Golf! 3, and Ice Age Village. Shark Dash lead the way onto PlayBook a few days earlier. All of these games have found their way to BlackBerry 10 already, but it's great to see that Gameloft continues to give the PlayBook some love too.

It will be interesting to see how the selection of games and other apps pans out between PlayBook and BB10 devices. As is, they exist as two separate BlackBerry Worlds, but with any luck, we'll see that PlayBook upgrade to BB10 sooner than later. One can only wonder what will happen to PlayBook-specific purchases when that happens. Until then, PlayBook owners can grab all of these top-notch games at the links below.

I love it when new things seem to pop up out of nowhere. With that in mind, I was quite a bit overly excited to see that League of Heroes has arrived in BlackBerry World for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The game which gained popularity on iOS, Android and Facebook is pretty awesome and one of my all time favorite time wasters. If you're not familiar with the game, it's a pretty epic action adventure game that you'll lose plenty of hours to and the features included make for some great replay value:

  • A never ending adventure - Hack your way through unlimited areas in the forest of Frognest.
  • Gear up and customize your character - Choose the best strategy to fight enemies and customize your character with countless armor options and weapons.
  • Evolve along your adventure - Gather experience and silver, find treasures, and unlock tons of unique items, including magic.
  • Complete quests - Complete over 60 quests, earn silver coins, and receive a higher ranking.
  • Beautiful hand-drawn graphics and animations - Enjoy spectacular-looking 2D visuals with top-notch animations.
  • Real-life weather effects - Play the game and enjoy several weather and time effects based on real weather in your location. You will experience heavy rain with thunder, cloudiness, fogs, night time, etc. Internet connection required.

The only downside i can see here is the fact that Gamelion Studios opted to charge $3.99 for the PlayBook version when all other variations of the game are free. I'm not saying it's not worth the $3.99 but some parity here would have been nice to see. You can check out the trailer above to get a good look at what you'll be getting yourself into or if you're ready to jump in right now, hit the link below to grab the download.

How to play your favorite old school console games on your BlackBerry 10 phone or BlackBerry PlayBook

$
0
0

With our first Talk Mobile discussions surrounding mobile gaming and whether or not it can kill off the console, I began feeling a little nostalgic for some of the old console games I used to play as a kid. Being born in 1981, the first console I really remember sitting down and playing was the Nintendo Entertainment System. Man, I begged my parents so much for that thing, and eventually they gave in and bought me one. Consoles through the ages didn't really require much computing power by today's standards. The Nintendo Entertainment System's processor for example ran at a maximum of 1.79MHz, which, realistically, likely isn't even enough power to get your smartphone to boot these days.

If you're like me and enjoy playing older, retro console games then your smartphone is more than powerful enough to run them by way of emulators. An emulator, if you're not familiar with the term, offers up the ability to run older games as if they were running in their intended environment. In short, you can play older games on modern systems.  Every platform out there these days has them available, often built using open source resources. iOS has mame along with a huge catalog of classic games companies have officially ported to the iOS platform, Android has a slew of emulators available in Google Play, Windows Phone 8 has a few emulators and yes, BlackBerry has plenty of emulators available for both the BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry 10.

In fact, a new all encompassing emulator that offers most older console systems has recently been released for BlackBerry 10 called RetroArch. It's capable of playing NES, GameBoy, Sega, PlayStation and other ROM's but therein lies the problem: ROM's. Aside from Google Play, which doesn't seem to care all that much, the apps for mobile devices I mentioned are apps you'll rarely find available in the various app stores. The emulators assist in running ROM's and ROM's by most standards are considered illegal. They are, essentially, copies of the games put out by publishers in a format that is easily shareable.

There are certainly arguments to be made there about how a game from 1985 that's no longer available for purchase should be an exception but that's not for me to decide. Personally, I have no problem with digging up those classics and loading them onto my device for my own personal use. If you feel the same way, then let's have a look at what is available for BlackBerry 10 and the BlackBerry PlayBook to help you complete that mission. Keep in mind, these are some of my favorites though a full list can be found in the CrackBerry forums:

Installing the emulators

Having tested a lot of them, my new personal favorite has to be RetroArch. It has a Cascades frontend and folks like Catalystg and many others are working on getting the rest ported over to Cascades as well. Plus, as noted above, it's an all encompassing emulator covering Nintendo, Sega, PlayStation gaming engines and more. To put it plainly, it's one of the best emulators I've used in terms of ease of use and compatibility.

Unfortunately, it'll likely never get accepted into BlackBerry World and just like all the others listed, in order to make use of it, you'll need to sideload the .bar files in order to get them on your device. The way I suggest and have found to be the easiest, if you're not tech savvy, is to use the Google Chrome extension, though some recent OS leaks appear to of have broken it. I've written out the steps below, but you can also find a visual guide here and a video here.

  • Download and install Google Chrome if you don't already have it.
  • Download and install from the Google Web Store "PlayBook App Manager".
  • Put your BlackBerry into development mode (Settings > Security and Privacy > Development Mode). Be sure to create a password, if it asks.
  • Note the IP of your device from this screen as well. It should default to 169.254.0.1 but just in case it doesn't, make note.
  • Plug your device into your PC/Mac until it says it's been connected and then visit the IP address be it 169.254.0.1 or the one you noted.
  • You may get a warning about SSL certificates, this is normal, just go ahead and click "Proceed Anyway". It does no harm.
  • From there, you can log in to your device. Make sure you enter the password you set up when asked.
  • Once logged in, you'll see a screen with all the apps installed currently on your device.
  • You can then simply drag and drop any .bar file into the browser to begin the install process.
  • You'll see the progress as it goes and once complete, you can then disconnect your device.

If you find this method of sideloading just isn't happening for you, there are several other ways to get the apps installed. There are solutions for both Windows and Mac available but to be perfectly honest, there is no "easy" method of doing it. Each person has to find out what way works best for them in order to get it working. Remember, this stuff is really intended for developers to be able to test their apps with. The ability to sideload for "average" users is just a side effect of being helpful to BlackBerry developers.

Obtaining the ROM's

Finding ROM's to play isn't all that difficult. There are literally thousands of sites out there that offer downloads, but some of them are, shall we say, a little shady or often times spammy leading you to click forever just to find a download link. Most of the files you come across are going to be in zip files or rar files and for that, you'll need to ensure you have something that is capable of opening those files. Once you obtain the files, extract them. Once extracted they can be placed onto your device. Keep in mind some emulators require them to be in a specific location such as Documents/ROMS in order to work but for the most part, the emulators will allow you to browse directly to the file through the UI. I have most of mine stored on my SD Card just simply titled ROM's.

I'm giving away my secrets here but it's really in your best interest to find a site that offers a mobile version. That way, you can download the ROM's directly to your device without needing to involve your PC or Mac to get things running. The only issue with that is that sometimes the files will come packed in a format your BlackBerry device may not recognize, in which case there may be an app to help you, or you simply just have to look for a different version or wait until you get near a computer. One site I particularly favor offers up some Cool ROM's, always has working files, and has a sweet mobile version.

Caveats

Being able to play all the games you grew up with is awesome. Being able to play them on your BlackBerry device is even sweeter. But not all is fun and games when it comes to ROM's. Obviously, there is a bit of effort involved with getting things up and running and even if you do manage to get the apps installed and the ROM's downloaded, there is still a chance they may not work to your expectations. Often times they won't run, the controls are wonky, the sound is off, the graphics are glitchy and whatever else you can possibly think of. But, when you find that classic game that you love and it just so happens to work properly, it's awesome and makes the time you spend messing about well worth it.

To close this one out, this is also one of the reasons I believe mobile gaming will never fully kill off the console. The console makers have thus far been reluctant to bring some of their most beloved games to the mobile platforms and because of that, people keep returning to the console. It's become a "thing' now for publishers to release the old classics on the console and while emulators are really cool, there's still that nostalgia of playing an old classic with a controller in hand. Granted, it's a small reason but it's the sole reason I still pick up my PS3 controller and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Want to talk more gaming? Stick around all this week for Talk Mobile, we've got plenty more content lined up for you all.

I know the BlackBerry PlayBook hasn't been getting a lot of love lately but that doesn't mean it's totally being neglected. I also know that when Modern Combat 4 came out for BlackBerry 10 there was folks wanting to have it available for the BlackBerry PlayBook because of the nature of the game and it's download size.

Luckily, Gameloft must have heard those same concerns and as such have now released Modern Combat 4 for all you BlackBerry PlayBook owners out there. Just in case you're not familiar with the game, you get to take on the role of an elite soldier who must track down and protect the worlds leaders and protect them from a terrorist group. Time for some PlayBook gaming fun with Crazy Kangaroo

The BlackBerry PlayBook has been missing out on some action lately as all eyes have been on the BlackBerry 10 devices. However, I discovered a new brilliant game called Crazy Kangaroo and it's a real beauty.

Quite simply, you control a Kangaroo (Barney) who is being chased by a bad guy. The aim of the game is to collect as many stars along the way as you jump over lilly pads and other objects in your bid to outrun the enemy who will try to shoot you.

It's all about using the tilt controls with this one. Not only to move left and right, but tilting the tablet forward will speed up Barney and tilting back will slow him down. As you progress through the levels you will become more reliant on the back and forth tilt to ensure you don't land in the water. You do get a a few lives in each game but the more stars you collect the more you will have to spend in the shop where you can buy bonus items to assist you on your quest.

The game runs perfectly on the PlayBook. It's fast paced, colorful and has some great sound effects too - Just what I want from a quality game on my tablet

Full highlights include:

  • 4 fantastic worlds
  • Eye-candy graphics
  • Easy to learn gameplay
  • Hilarious power-ups including Sugar Rush and Multi-Score
  • Over 50 missions

We mentioned a while ago that Modern Combat 4 had hit BlackBerry 10 and that was shortly followed by its arrival on the BlackBerry PlayBook. I'm a huge fan of the series and although I've been playing it on my Z10 I prefer to play this type of game on a bigger screen so I had to download it for the PlayBook too.

If you have played any of the previous versions, on any platform, you know that you are going to get a truly fantastic gaming experience and Modern Combat 4 is no different. The graphics and sound effects are supurb and it runs like a dream on the PlayBook.

Controls wise things are much the same as before, You have a virtual joypad on the left of the screen and you can use your other thumb to pan around. We also get the crouch tab, a run tab and of course the fire and cross hair buttons. Various weapons can be picked up along the way and these are shown at the top right of the screen. You can switch weapons just by swiping the tab.

The better you do the more cash you will earn which you can spend in the shop. I tend to spend most of mine on grenades as they come in jolly handy but there is a selection of items to buy.

If you like action packed combat style games this is the one to get and at only $0.99 you won't find a better game for that price.

Head on over to BlackBerry World on your PlayBook to pick this one up or if you want it for your Z10 click the link below from your device.
